Nuestro Jardín Academy, a brand new Spanish Immersion preschool, is seeking full-time and part-time Spanish-speaking/bilingual preschool teachers and assistants beginning in August 2016. Our preschool provides a high-quality immersion program with an emergent curriculum, which responds to children’s needs and interests. We believe in making this a unique language and cultural immersion experience for children, and so it’s extremely important that candidates be flexible, show initiative, and be able to adapt to the ever-changing needs of our children.
Job Description:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for the overall supervision, planning, and management of a Spanish immersion preschool class:
- Create and manage a warm and challenging learning environment for students, incorporating appropriate activities which meet the needs of the group as well as those of individual children and families.
- Provide and maintain a safe environment.
- Be able to read, speak, and write with native-like fluency and proficiency in Spanish.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for the overall supervision, planning, and management of a Spanish immersion preschool class:
- Create and manage a warm, and challenging learning environment for students, incorporating appropriate activities which meet the needs of the group as well as those of individual children and families.
- Assist in creating, revising, and implementing lesson plans based on our Spanish immersion program’s goals and objectives.
- Assist in designing and maintaining a warm, nurturing, enriched, and challenging learning environment.
- Assist in the maintenance of a safe, healthy, and orderly classroom environment.
- Be responsible and oversee the accomplishment of routine tasks with regard to the health, safety, and well-being of children, and maintain the program in accordance with the requirements of the Oregon Child Care Division.
- Adhere to personnel policies as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Participate in professional development activities and complete continuing education requirements.
- Be available to substitute for other classes as needed.
Hours:
Part-Time: 20-30 hours per week
Full-Time: 34-38 hours per week
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bilingual Spanish speaker
- Education and/or Experience:
- Teacher: Qualify under one of the following below:
- AA Degree in early childhood education, elementary education, child development, or special education OR
- At least two years of experience working with young children and families in a daycare/ preschool program. OR
- Completion of 20 semester credits or 30 quarter credits of training at a college or university in Early childhood education, child development, elementary education, or special education AND at least one year of experience working with young children and families in a daycare/preschool program.
- Assistant: Qualify under one of the following below:
- Completion of 20 credits (semester system) or 30 credits (quarter system) of training at a college or university in early childhood education, child development, elementary education, or special education OR
- A one year state or nationally recognized credential related to preschool-age care OR
- At least one year of qualifying teaching experience, with at least one year as a teacher, in a Certified Child Care Center or comparable group care program, in the care of preschool-age children
- Completion of 10 credits (semester system) or 15 credits (quarter system) of training at a college or university in early childhood education, child development, elementary education, or special education AND At least six months of qualifying teaching experience in a Certified Child Care Center or comparable group care program, in the care of preschool-age children
- Enrollment in Oregon Central Background Registry (can be done right after accepting employment)
- The following are also required for employment and must be obtained within 90 days after accepting the position.
- Current First Aid/CPR card
- Food Handlers Card
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (not required but a plus):
Skills, expertise, or aptitude in:
- the visual arts
- the performing arts (dance, music, drama)
- second language teaching
CALENDAR INFORMATION:
Nuestro Jardín Academy mostly follows the Portland Public Schools Calendar:
- 2 weeks off in December
- 1 week off in Spring
- 8 observed holidays during the school year
- 4 days of professional development/planning days before the school year begins
- 5 days of professional development/planning days throughout the school year
Summer camp sessions:
- Run for part of June, July, and part of August.
- 4 weeks off during the summer.
- 1 observed holiday in the summer
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
- $11-$17 per hour depending on education and work experience
- 7 weeks off in a year
- One week of paid sick/personal days

After 90 days of full-time employment (34+ hours a week):
- Two weeks paid vacation during Winter and Spring breaks
